Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
