European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
